Review of Don't Look Now (1936) by Marc L — 22 Oct 2008
This kept turning up on 'Top 50 Horror' lists, so, being a horror buff and having never seen it, I thought I'd give it a look.
Firstly, I would call it more of a drama/thriller, but it gets labeled as 'psychological horror' because it contains subject matter like apparitions, second sight, perhaps even ghosts...but I don't think this makes it a horror film. In fact, it would probably be more effective as a 'horror' if it wasn't labeled as such, and you went into it thinking it was going to be a straightforward drama. Tom and Jerry cartoons contain action and violence, but this doesn't make them Rambo 4!
It has dated badly, and I found myself yearning for a steadicam instead of the constant hand-held camerawork. But is well acted, has some nice moments, and even has *SPOILER ALERT!* an ending which the Blair Witch Project totally ripped off *SPOILER OVER!*. But having seen it, I doubt I'd sit through it again.
