Review of Donnie Darko (2001) by Prattay S — 08 Jul 2013
In RIchard Kelly's debut direction film, Donnie Darko explores the motifs of the supernatural, mental illness, the paranormal, time travel, and a contrast between what is real and what is surreal. Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) shines, in an earlier role of his film career, as the title character, a demented teenage adolescent who pops pills like any other depressed.
angst-filled teenage boy in the 1980s. The difference between any other 1980s teen and Donnie Darko is that Donnie Darko has supernatural abilities that he is not even aware of. Co-starring in this extraordinary film is Drew Barrymore (E.
T.) and Academy Award nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Secretary, Crazy Heart) among many other famous actors and actresses. Both of these ladies deliver spunk like no other. As a sassy, controversal teacher and a repressed teenager, Barrymore and Gyllenhaal thrive in the fantastic environment of Donnie Darko.
The film goes off without a hitch keeping the audience enthralled by the complexity of the plot and the witty, dark humor that Richard Kelly provides in his screenplay and accents with his direction. Fantastic film! A++.
