Review of Donnie Darko (2001) by Sash M — 12 Mar 2014
The first time I saw this film was ten years ago. Back then, I thought it was tremendously profound. I saw it again recently, and while I still think it is a good film that begs for analysis, I no longer see it as the trenchant film I once thought it was.
But Donnie is a thoroughly complex and sympathetic character, trapped within his own personal Gethsemane of a time loop. The rabbit is as frightening a character as I have seen in cinema, mostly because of what he stands for.
Be prepared to be depressed.
