"Donnie Darko" is a beautifully twisted movie. This is one of those films that almost requires 2 or 3 viewings to start to 'get it'. Somewhat like fantasy, but also perhaps a view into the world of a paranoid schizophrenic teen.
You never really know if Donnie is simply paranoid delusional or actually seeing visions of the future. All of these ambiguities add to the disturbing sense that you are going crazy along with Donnie.
The song at the end, "Mad World", captures this feeling well.
