Review of Donkey Skin (1908) by Isabelle M — 18 Sep 2007
Who else but Jacques Demy was making unabashed fairy tales in 1970? And who better to be the princess than Catherine Deneuve? Legendary actors Jean Marais (the grief-addled king who wants to marry his daughter) and Delphine Seyrig (fairy godmother) round out the cast; Michel Legrand contributes the odd score.
As with other Demy films, the colors are vibrant and take on a life of their own alongside lyrical moments such as Deneuve running slo-mo through the forest covered in donkey skin, and the singing of some of the dialog all create a dreamlike texture.
While the project lacks the overall sparkle of Umbrellas of Cherbourg, you should still see it at your next Cinderella-themed party. (By the way, the Flixster / Facebook programmers should work on diacritics display - the film is not "Peau d'acne" !).
