Review of Dolphin Tale (2011) by Matt W — 31 Mar 2014
Sure, there is a lot to groan at in this film. The contrivances. The Hollywood schmaltz in every scene, but although this film may be a little too happy at times, it is still a good introduction for young children to disability.
Added to this is the fact that the film does have a heart that sustains throughout, and kept me engaged without annoying which is quite an achievement. Sometimes schmaltz can really ruin a film, but here it goes back to to an old era of film making- those classic family films, instead of having chipmunks squeaking songs, with poo jokes thrown in every two seconds.
This is a film I would watch as a child. And it was made for a family to watch, not for a parent to be dragged too.
It is no masterpiece and had a few moments that will leave me cringing for the next few days, but this film charmed me, and actually moved me a little.
Nothing major, but I was charmed, and that was enough for me.
