Review of Dogville (2003) by Wes R — 09 Sep 2008
I didn't hate this movie, but I certainly didn't like it. I find the style to be interesting, but very pretentious. I found the acting to be good, but I could barely stand to watch any character on screen.
And as the film ended I really started to understand what this director was trying to say and I almost got angry. I had read about Lars von Triers hatred of America, but after watching this movie I can clearly see that he has no idea how America really is.
He has taken stereotypes and taken them to the extreme to prove his point that America is greedy and doesn't want to help anybody, but when you put these issues to such extremes I think that your point is lost and holds no purpose.
Near the end of the film, Kidman and Caan have an argument about which of them is more arrogant. The answer is, neither, it is the director, Lars von Trier, who is the most arrogant of them all.
