Review of Dogville (2003) by Laura W — 21 Dec 2008
Lars Von Trier's self shot tale of arrogance and retribution and its doctrine of absence made present reveals a snarling beast under the most tepid and perfunctory masks of civilization. The bourgeois Christian psyche is ripped to pieces as Nicole Kidman's gangster's daughter learns to accept her familial responsibilities with the help of Paul Bettany's self righteous village idiot.
From The Idiots' extremes of realism to the apex of representation in this film Von Trier lays claim to that rarest of accolades: genius.
