Review of Dogville (2003) by Alec B — 12 Feb 2011
You'll despise this or love it. I thought it was a bold, challenging piece of film making that forces the audience to really confront themselves and their own beliefs. I agree with many people that Lars von Trier's approach is almost Brechtian and it is a very effective was to handle the material.
The film is three hours of near agony for the central character, but von Trier isn't exploiting it for no reason he is pointing out the very simple and true fact that when people are given power over another person or people they will always end up misusing that power, sometimes in the most brutal ways.
It may be one of the more honest films about human nature at its worst.
