Review of Dogtown and Z-Boys (2002) by Brian M — 20 Nov 2010
Yeah sure maybe my opinion is a little biased (being that I really enjoy skateboarding), but it definitely in my top choices of documentaries that I have ever seen. Legendary skater turned director Stacy Peralta directs this documentary about a young group of skaters who revolutionized skateboarding and widespread revival of something once thought to be nothing more than a trend in childhood entertainment.
The story is of the Zephyr Skate Team from the slums of Saint Monica, CA in a rundown neighborhood known as Dogtown. Narrated by Sean Penn, Peralta does a fantastic job finding plenty of incredible footage from the time (the mid 1970's) as well as material from the famous skateboard photographer Craig Stecyk.
Mixed with the fantastic interviews from the skaters of the team today (including Jay Adams and Tony Alva) and an A-List soundtrack, this is phenomenal storytelling in its entirety. Everyone who is a skater, enjoys skating for fun, or just likes the culture of skateboarding should not miss this one.
This is how it all started.
