Review of Dogma (1999) by Quinn B — 01 Sep 2011
My Favourite Kevin Smith Film...
I know I have been giving alot of 100% lately, but it is because I have been watching amazing films. And this is no different. Dogma definitely ranks in my favourite films of all time, and when I eventually make a list, it should be quite high. Now before a couple months ago, I actually had no idea what this film was, but after hearing about it, and the stars in it, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Alan Rickman, etc. I knew I would eventually check it out, and I did. What an experience this film was, I was left amazed at how good this film was put together.
Dogma follows Bartleby (Affleck), and Loki (Damon). They are 2 angels that were kicked out of heaven, to spend the rest of humanity on earth. But once Bartleby, and Loki discover a loop hole to get back into heaven, they must travel to New Jersey within 4 days to a church. But if they do this then all humanity would seize to exist. So god sends Metatron (Rickman) down to earth to appoint a random woman named Bethany to this matter. She must get to the church in New Jersey and stop them to save humanity. Throughout the way she gets the help from, 2 profits, Jay and Silent Bob, Rufus (Chris Rock), and Serendipity (Selma Hayek). But they also have to deal with Azrael (Jason Lee), who has come up from hell to stop Bethany and the others from getting to Bartleby and Loki. Now I know it sounds like I just told you alot, but I personally don't find any of that to be a spoiler. Throughout the film much more happens, that is just the main point.
Ben Affleck does a tremendous job as Bartleby, especially towards the end. I personally believe this is one of his stronger performances, not saying that it is his best.
Matt Damon does a great job as Loki. As well as Affleck, I believe this is one of Matt Damon's best performances, they fit their characters so well.
Alan Rickman, for the short time he is in the film, does pretty good, I can't judge him much since he really wasn't in the film a lot.
Jason Lee does quite an outstanding job as Azrael. Mixing comedy and seriousness in his character.
I also enjoyed Selma Hayek, Jason Mewes, and Chris Rock. All of them play their roles to perfection.
I actually thought this was an ingenious film. It is definitely not to be taken seriously, but there definitely are some dramatic parts. It definitely took alot of balls for Kevin Smith to make this, but I definitely commend him on doing so, because I personally think he has made a classic.
Dogma succeeds on many levels, including, comedic, dramatic, and disgusting.
My Rating For Dogma is.
100%.
