Review of Doghouse (2009) by Heidi B — 25 Feb 2010
Doghouse follows a group of guys on a weekend boozathon in the countryside to help a mate forget his imminent divorce. Unfortunately the sleepy hamlet the have decided to visit (for slightly implausible reasons) has been hit by a zombie plague that has turned all it's women into manflesh eating ghouls.
The trailer made it look like a lads mag rip-off of Shaun of the Dead, in fact that's wide off the mark as the film merrily satirises British maleness and smartly manages to have it's cake and eat it. Doghouse is a really good Brit comic horror that gets right everything LVK gets wrong. Funny, gory, and with a smart edge of self depreciation. Jake West I'm sorry I doubted you.
It's nice to see Danny Dyer in something decent for a change, as I quite like the guy. And the fantastic Stephen Graham from This is England is in it.
Some great lines too, "this is not the time to stop objectifying women" exclaims one bloke when Dyer gets cold feet about terminating zombie chicks. And I liked Dyers response when asked what might have caused the zombie plague "bird flu?" Well I laughed.
