Review of Dog Soldiers (2002) by Matthew K — 14 Sep 2009
One of the (ridiculously) few good werewolf movies. It has a pretty good storyline (even if it does borrow from Aliens... a lot) and action, but the best part of this movie are the characters. The actors portray the desperate soldiers trapped in an unbelievable situation shockingly well, and the different personalities and fact that there's *gasp* actually development makes it worth the time.
I actually really love this movie because it shows off what cinema can be when the people involved are having fun. You can tell that everyone involved just got together and went "let's make a memorable werewolf movie" and had a good time with the material presented. When this happens, you get a good film.
The werewolves themselves are notoriously low budget, but I have to be honest, it isn't that horrible considering the low budget. The fact of the matter is that for what they had to work with, the werewolves don't look that horrible. Hell, some of the direction sequences featuring quick snippets of them aren't bad at all.
My only true complaint is that some lighting issues where in the same scene it looks darker/lighter within a few seconds... but like the werewolves, this is all due to budget.
Still, if you like non-cuddly supernatural stuff, you might as well give it a shot.
