Review of Dog Soldiers (2002) by Tara K L — 08 Feb 2010

While the title and cover of this movie would never suggest it, this werewolf flick is surprisingly good, being both suspenseful and highly entertaining because of how much fun everyone appears to be having.

Basically, it's about a small group of soldiers on a training mission in the forest, who come to encounter werewolves and end up trapped inside a cabin fighting for their lives. The plot is really nothing now, but the execution by rookie director Neil Marshall is what makes the film work.

I found myself actually feeling sympathy for the characters, which is something that I find is seriously lacking in most modern horror movies. The tone borders on comedy at times, but without sacrificing the intensity of the story, which allows it to find the perfect balance.

This is probably my favourite werewolf movie, but I mean, come on....how many genuinely good werewolf movies are there really? This is a genre that is in dire need of some new blood, and Marshall delivers.
