Review of Dog Soldiers (2002) by Jacob P — 06 Sep 2013
When Neil Marshall is at the top of his game (The Descent), he's capable of creating some of the most innovative films being made today... Dog Soldiers is no different. A uniquely different take on a classic subject, this werewolf flick is unlike any of it's kind in several crucial ways.
First off, the acting is phenomenal. Much, much better than what you'd expect to see from a movie like this. Second, and more importantly, the script emphasizes the characters relationships and develops those characters throughout.
So many sci-fi films today focus solely on the characters relationship with the creatures attacking them and there quest to escape from/end the situation. Dog Soldiers is the story of a group of soldiers on a routine training mission gone horribly wrong, but the focus always remains on the characters relationships, making you care exponentially more for them, which makes the horror aspect all the more frightening.
Kevin Mckidd and especially Sean Pertwee were incredible in this film. Pertwee seems to have a knack for always being cast in bad movies. I'm glad he got to be a part of at least one success, because he is an extremely talented actor.
Bottom line, love this movie, always have. Loved it since the first time I saw it when I was thirteen, and I love it even more today. I'd recommend this to any and all genre fans. You won't be disappointed.
