Review of Dog Day Afternoon (1975) by Peter G — 24 Aug 2013
Al Pacino and John Cazale star as Sonny and Sal... Two down on their luck losers looking to rob a bank so that Sonny can pay for his male lover to have a sex operation. A bank robbery that should have taken a couple of minutes turns into hours.
Soon not only is the place overan with cops, but a crowd of people and newsmen also fill the streets as the robbery turns into a big circus. All the while Sonny and Sal plot their next escape plan.

This is a 70's movie at it's best. You know you're in for a good movie by the great cast of Al, John Cazale, and Charles Durning. What makes this movie is so great is that we have great plot development not only with the two robbers, but the hostages also.
The movie while not containing a boatload of action, it keeps a good place and delievers with good dialogue that never allows the film to drift into a more clitche B movie film. The tension is also great when it needs to be and that keeps the interest.
The thing that's also refreshing is that the film doesn't really attempt to pull the good vs. Evil routine that this type of films usally pull. This movie is based on a true story, and so this approach helps relate to the situation better and it gives us a great film.
10/10.
