Review of Dodsworth (1936) by Joel A — 29 Nov 2012
Simply the story of a millionaire car company owner retiring & coming to grips with it & trying desperately to make the relationship between his wife work despite the vanity she has.
I guess you can't by to hard on this film since it was truly targeted at a 1930's audience but I found the upper crust world so pointless & never understood the pursuit of it, but time where no doubt very different back then.
Once the film got going the husband grew as a character & you began to believe in him & the only true to herself character in the film was Mary Astor's character. I think the director did a great job but he clearly had studio enforcement & certain scenes where so trivial.
