Review of Doctor Zhivago (1965) by Jorge F — 04 Feb 2009
One of the few cases where the movie is actually much better than the book (and the book in this case was very, very good). Gorgeous cinematography that captures both the sweep of the Russian revolution and its impact on individual lives.
A tremendous cast, with brilliant performances by Rod Steiger, Julie Christie, and of course, Omar Sharif. Stunning moments include the attack on a peaceful demonstration by the Czar's cavalry juxtaposed with the affairs between Julie Christie's character and Rod Steiger's.
And, oh, the music. When I was on vacation in Russia in the mid-1980s the book and movie were still banned by the Soviet Union but the music played in hotel elevators.
