Review of Doctor Zhivago (1965) by Allan N — 26 Feb 2010
I didn't rate this movie before on Flixter, but I've seen it many times. Just last week on TCM, in fact. It's one of my favorites (I know, I've got a lot of those). It's not perfect, but I rate it high for sentimental reasons.
Such a beautiful and dramatic and tragic story. Very Russian in that way, even though they didn't put Russians in starring roles (ridiculous). I haven't read the book so I can't compare the two, but the movie stands alone just fine (especially considering it's from 1965).
The costumes, score and the settings are so lush and fantastic. I love the little details, like the sunflowers losing their petals when Laura leaves. The war and love stories are both so tragic and engaging.
It's a long one, but there's an intermission, love that. Bring back the intermission!
