Review of Doctor Who (1996) by Helen N — 30 Jun 2007
In 1996, 7 years after the BBC put 'Doctor Who' on an indefinite hiatus, the Fox Network financed this televised film as a potential pilot to a new (American funded) series. Filmed in Vancouver, "Doctor Who" (aka, Doctor Who: The Movie, or Doctor Who: The Enemy Within) recived high ratings in the UK, but was aired in competition with the final episode of Roseanne and a chicago Bulls playoff game.
Needless to say, the US ratings were miserable and no new series came of it. While the movie is not awful, it's not great either. But it kept Doctor Who relevant for a few years, and it gave us a great Eighth Doctor in Paul Mcgann, paving the way for the new (2005 and beyond) BBC series.
Hooray!
