Review of Doctor Who (1996) by David M — 21 Feb 2011
This was co-production of BBC and Fox hopeful that it would re-launch the Doctor Who franchise. Fox didn't pick it up. It's interesting for what it is. The only filmed #8 adventure and the evolution between the original adventures and the 2005 re-launch.
It had great production values and I really enjoyed Paul McGann's take on the Doctor. (There are many BBC audio adventures of 8 that you should check out.) As for everthing else, it couldn't decide what it was, a children's show or an adult scifi drama.
It also felt chopped down and poorly edited. Daphne Ashbrook was fine as the Doctors' companion and it was nice to see #7 (Sylvester McCoy) but Eric Roberts must have thought this was a spin-off of The Power Rangers.
His portrayal of The Master was over-the-top even for him! Most fans at the time mainly critized the new to Who twist of a romance between the Doctor and his Companion. Fun but very very flawed. Added half a star just for McGann's Doctor.
