Review of Do the Right Thing (1989) by Max O — 30 Nov 2009
For all those who think Crash is a great movie about racism, I recommend that you check out this flick, or, as Spike Lee calls it, this joint. This movie is everything Crash isn't. It's in your face, it's loud, it's angry, and it's a lot more complicated than you'd expect. It doesn't care if you agree with it, and that's great, as it's not the middle-of-the-road melodrama that Crash was. There are no clear-cut answers, only questions. And that's the best thing about it. It treats racism as the complicated subject it is, gives some hints as to the causes, or at least, the contributions to it. Spike Lee might come off as a smug shit in a lot of interviews, but damn, his movies are never boring, and whether you love it or hate it, it'll have you talking.
Also, Public Enemy soundtrack. Fight the Power, and always do the right thing.
