I don't understand the appeal of this "classic" at all. Melodramatic, poor writing, characters that are mostly either uninteresting, stupid, or completely irredeemable due to being flat out racists (which falls in with the stupid category as well, I guess).

Let's not forget about the COPS, UH OH here they come, up to no good, the racist murderers, no reason to do what they do. The acting was also piss poor, "led" by Spike Lee, very few of the performances were believable.

A lot of that can be attributable to the bad writing though. I didn't like the style at all, if one is trying to tell a gritty realistic story, they shouldn't call attention to the camera that much.

The subject matter is important, and I assume that's why this gets such high marks from others, but the actual movie doesn't warrant such praise.
