"Provocative "doesn't even begin to do it justice and at least most of the time that inherent controversiality resonates with alarming clarity. Then the ending comes along and asks some fairly dark questions that bother me only because I'm not quite sure I have any answers.
I'll be brewing on the climactic moment when Mookie picks up that trash can for weeks...months...years. I have to admire Spike Lee for not being afraid to point an accusing finger within himself and at his own people and his unique voice builds and builds throughout the movie, establishing something singular and powerful that I would easily recommend to anyone.
Are there contradictions within his message? Yes, but they're the right contradictions and I would be lying if I said that final shot of MLK and Malcolm X didn't send a faint chill down my spine.
