Review of Do the Right Thing (1989) by John A — 16 Jul 2012
"Yeah? Well fuck you, too, and fuck Michael Jackson".
Surprised, very very surprised...
I've been very disappointed in the past with hyped Spike Lee movies, this being the only reason it's took me so long to watch "Do the Right Thing" but unlike other movies, Spike Lee ticks all the boxes with this tale of tension on a hot ass summers day in Brooklyn, USA.
I like the way that Spike Lee challenges the sensitive subject of racism by making it comical but never losing it's importance in the process, it's very light until the last 20mins or so then the seriousness of the subject comes out and hits you.
Despite everyone on the block struggling to make a living they turn on each other when they should be pulling together as a community, each ethnic group blaming the other for the problems and the poverty instead of doing something about it.
Even when it becomes apparent the real enemy is the over zealous Police Department and the corruption from the powers that be they still bicker amongst themselves instead of doing something practical.
This is a true cultural gem, and I'm sure it will still be relevant in decades to come...You don't need to be Black or White or whatever the fuck to be realize we are all in the same shit together...
