Review of Do the Right Thing (1989) by Kate H — 24 Apr 2014
One of those films I've always meant to get around to and finally have. Definitely understand why it's held in such high esteem.
On the hottest day of the year, a mostly black neighbourhood goes about its day but racial tensions begin to rise, or become more evident, with the heat. As old as the film is it still rings very true and sadly very current.
The neighbourhood comes alive, as do the characters, which makes the events that much more realistic and hard hitting as everything comes to a head in the infamous riot scene. Whether or not the right thing is done at the end is perhaps up to interpretation but Spike Lee himself has says that question is almost exclusively asked of him by white people.
It is a very powerful film and always will be.
