Review of Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing (2006) by Kate B — 28 Aug 2007
This is an interesting study of the hypocrisy of freedom of speech. Natalie Maines made an off-handed comment deriding George W. Bush days before the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Not surprisingly she and the Dixie Chicks paid the price in personal attacks and sales of their records.
However what is truly interesting about this documentary is to see how this one statement changed the members of the group in their personal and professional lives. I have never been a fan of country music, but after watching this movie, I have Dixie Chicks songs running through my head.
It is amazing to think that someone had the presence to record the early reactions to the statements.
