Review of Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing (2006) by Tom K — 12 Jun 2007
I don't usually care for a documentary about a person. There is too much worshipping or mudslinging, depending on which slant the director is coming from. But "Shut Up & Sing" does what a documentary should: it shows you the good and the bad of its protagonists and represents something much bigger than any one or three persons.
In this case, that something is an incisive look at the true state of the freedom of speech in America.
I much enjoyed spending an hour and a half getting to know the Dixie Chicks.
I'm also now really interested to hear their "Long Way Around" album, the creation of which this film documents as the Chicks weather a storm of controversy and take on their new role in the world of music.
