Review of Divertimento (2000) by Daniel M — 24 Dec 2007
Endless, but rewarding if you stick it out for all four hours. Like a lot of Rivette's other films, it's a painstaking examination of artistic process, with all its detours, contortions, and emotional consequences for the characters involved.
A personal note: I watched this film instead of the Super Bowl last year, figuring that my time was better spent watching Emmanuelle Beart strut around without any clothes on for four hours rather than a bunch of guys in shoulder pads and tight pants fight over a ball and sell beer.
I definitely have no regrets about my decision.
