Review of District 9 (2009) by Algea L — 03 Nov 2014
A movie that had to be made in South Africa. Not only does it work as perfect science fiction. But, it becomes an unflinching metaphor for the past present and future of South Africa. Sadly a place ranks at the top of the workd in rapes -also exists as a country and people still recovering from a rape in resources and cultural sources.
Apartheid or as was called by white south africans as "Seperated Development". The alien "prawns" of the film living in the same shantytowns that non-whites grew up in, in a country that never matured.
But the film ends with hope that you wincingly celebrate with protagonist excellently protrayed by the genius Sharlto Copley. Just like South Africa is more than just their history of Apartheid - this film is more than just science fiction.
One of a few films that hold up to constant reviewing, I would trade them all to see it for the first time.
