Set and shot in South Africa District 9 is a great debut by Neill Bloomkamp and features some gritty locations and actions sequences often layered by comedic elements. Of course, what makes the film special is the underlying theme and message of apartheid and racism.
You should watch this movie if you like anything to do with aliens because it is much different than what we usually see.
