Review of District 9 (2009) by Phillip D — 14 Dec 2014
It is easy to see how the underlying look at racism propelled this movie to heights it probably never should have seen. Although District 9 is suitably entertaining and very thought provoking, the fact that the movie rests upon the idiotic and ludicrous assumption that visiting aliens would land in South Africa, which would then undertake primary defense and care-taking of said aliens is pretty sad.
I completely understand the director's heritage and the racial tone of the thing but unfortunately, Star Wars and Blade Runner didn't become the pinnacle of the science fiction genre by limiting themselves to a single country, much less South Africa, the most unlikely location for nearly every event that occurs in this movie.
The movie is really great until you hit that wall, at which point everything else becomes an exercise in futility. District 9 is great, but only as a one hit, one see wonder.
