Review of District 9 (2009) by Sinisteris T — 21 Jun 2014
Worthy of a second watch, because after the initial confusion and absurdity subsides, there's really an excellent story to be told. Tackling xenophobia and the heartless domination of government, and indulging in constant action and suspense, District 9 seldom pulls its punches.
The first third of the film, although immediately immerse, feels kind of frustrating. The aliens act much different than stereotyped, and Blomkamp didn't ease their anomalies into the movie. They are weak, grody, and are oddly similar to humans.
Speaking of which, all the human behaved like cruel jackasses. For a long time, it's difficult to take the aliens too seriously, or find any character or cause to root for. Thankfully, nearly all these problems vanish, as you begin to understand and embrace them.
The main character is very dynamic, and his alien companion will melt your heart, as they learn to work together for their best interests, and eventually, each other. Ambitious, thrilling, and emotional.
