Review of Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988) by Bobby W — 19 Nov 2008
A bitter, claustrophobic memoir. The fragmented narrative plays like a very long trailer for a far longer film. I found the constant use of jolly singsongs as a means of highlighting the misery of the situations the family faced rather annoying after a while.
It would be easy to dismiss this shovelled-on poignancy as cynical, but the dialogue, brilliantly-drawn characters and slavish attention to detail in the recreation of the tiny world they inhabit show that this is one from Davis's heart.
