Review of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) by Allen G — 03 Mar 2013
Enjoyable comedy with plenty going for it including an ever changing (although, predictable) script and good chemistry between Caine and Martin.
The comedy is fairly obvious and the outcome is too but it's still a fun affair. There's nothing honest here though and, while that's the point, it's still a fairly grim outlook for a comedy to have- Martin's character is repulsive with Caine's being only slightly less repulsive. This is all supposed to be okay though because we expect them to get their comeuppance but it doesn't make up for having to deal with such morally corrupt leads trying to make us laugh.
It's a good film but it's not a special one. I don't want a happy ending for these characters- anyone who does needs to ask themselves why.
