Review of Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974) by Guy G — 13 Nov 2012
[D/40] This quintessential 70s car-chase flick has a kind of meandering, desultory, ragged charm, what with its too-cool anti-hero (Fonda) and devilishly revving action cars (a 1966 Chevrolet Impala and 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440) roaring and snorting around picturesque rural central California (not poorly photographed), defying the ridiculously monomaniacal sheriff, (Vic Morrow, giving it all he's got).
It's obviously borrowing themes from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, while simultaneously (alas) inspiring someone in the invention of The Dukes of Hazard TV show. Otherwise, a lot of mediocre-to-bad acting and zero character development within a really inane plot involving NASCAR dreams and extremely improbable supermarket heists; though, admittedly, no one here is taking much of this very seriously, and there is a discernible tone of in-joke humor underneath all of it.
