Review of Dirty Harry (1971) by Richard L — 20 Feb 2010
Inspector "Dirty" Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) manly punches and guns his way through various duties while trying to stop a sociopath from killing random San Francisco citizens and extorting the mayor, with one or two existential moments and some nice one-liners.
This movie probably established an archetype, that is, the disgruntled badass lone wolf cop who uses efficient, yet morally and ethically controversial tactics to uphold his own view of what justice should be in spite of official laws and regulations.
Since then, it seems that an exemplar of Dirty Harry is featured in about every police movie ever made (e. g., Mad Max 1, Lethal Weapon, ...).
