Review of Dirty Filthy Love (2005) by Julie F — 02 Feb 2009
(Sheen - that has now done Tony Blair and Frost/Nixon) More of a treatise on mental illness. A talented, successful architectâ??s life spirals out of control due to turrets and OCD. I see people living on the streets and wonder, how they got there, what their life was like before, if they have family that worries about them, cares about them, couldnâ??t take it anymore.
Michael Sheen turned in a respectful and absolutely heartbreaking performance. He had a successful career, money and resources. He had family that loved him, worried about him and cared for him, but were at a loss of how to help him.
He was receiving health care, but the provider was overworked and unsympathetic. I understand the ex-wifeâ??s desire for closure, but her completely selfish disregard for his mental state was inexcusable.
There was comedy. It was necessary break up the emotional stranglehold. The farm scene was brilliant, and the support groups were lovely. Henderson, as always, was superb. Charley was a beautifully complex character fighting the good fight, trying to make it through the day as well as trying to â??support the inmatesâ??.
I highly recommend this movie, but be prepared for a DARK romantic comedy.
