Review of Dirty Filthy Love (2005) by Angie L — 18 Jul 2006
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Because I knew what I was in for. Great special effects, stunts, camerawork, Johnny Depp as the oddball pirate "captain", Keira Knightley looking luscious... the one real surprise was that of actually getting a sense of being from the heavily made-up character of Davey Jones (he of the famed "locker", which plays a part in this film). Also occuring that I had a sneaking suspicion I was "in for" was my napping out at the hour-and-a-half point of this two-and-a-half hour film. For all the great technical effects displayed to support a weak-assed story... it was like hiring Charlie Trotter for the task of preparing an entree of microwave popcorn..

Malevolence.
It's what I was feeling after seeing this piece of crap movie (nope, I'm probably not the first one to play off the title of the movie... blah blah blah). Not only does this film rip off many of the better-known techniques of John Carpenter in his creation of Halloween, but the DVD audaciously presents said film in its previews section, along with the equally upstanding classic horror film The Evil Dead. As if the makers of Malevolence were proclaiming their own platform in the pantheon of the few and proud horror films made since The Exorcist that are actually good. .

Dirty Filthy Love.
A nice surprise of a film from Great Britain, starring Michael Sheen as a thiry-ish aged architect whose Turret's Syndrome/obsessive-compulsive disorder has aversely affected his job and his marriage. Shirley Henderson is Charlotte, a fellow obsessive-compulsive who leads a support group and takes him under his wing as he faces his disorder with mixed motives. Sheen's performance is alternately laughter-inducing (curses escape from his mouth in bursts as his stress increases) and pitiably affecting (he stalks his separated wife and grows reclusive a la Howard Hughes), and the script is smart, crackling, and caring of the excellent supporting cast..
