(1933) Dinner At Eight.
COMEDY DRAMA.
Based on the Broadway hit by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber centering on a group of wealthy socialites and their troubles that happen before their 'dinner at eight'. The dinner is set up by Millicent Jordan (Billie Burke) who also happens to be married to Larry Renault(John Barrymore) who owns stock that has just crashed. As a 1933 comedy, I haven't even laughed once. But in retrospect, all I can say is that if this was during the year of 1933 then "Dinner At Eight" may have worked but it isn't. Furthermore, it centers on a small group of wealthy socialists during the "Great Depression' when stocks have gone down and so forth, and as a regular person I find that hard to relate, to see rich people struggling with their money woes when it's more interesting to see how poor people are struggling to get by. I wouldn't even waste time watching this movie even as a play. Remade a few more times including a made for tv movie.
2 out of 4 stars.
