Review of Diner (1982) by Michael T — 17 Aug 2008
This film has developed a cult following; director Barry Levinson assembled a cast of young actors who all went on to have some degree of success in films as the 1980s proceeded. As a wedding approaches, six guys are fumbling towards adulthood but would prefer to spend time at a local Baltimore diner.
The film appeals more to men than women as it does focus on what are universally male perspectives on the issue of growing up. The film depicts a time, place, and era which was long over in 1982 and last scene evokes the end of an era as much as the end of childhood.
I almost docked the film one star since it is responsible for Steve Guttenberg's career (but Steve Guttenberg no longer has a career).
