Review of Digimon: The Movie (2000) by Max D — 26 Jan 2012
New monsters. New battles. Now on the big screen, featuring all three stories into one, including a fast-growing egg, a computer virus, and fighting monsters. When a powerful new Internet Digimon hatches and begins to consume data at an alarming rate, the Digidestined must put an end to the destruction before the damage becomes irreversible and worldwide communication halts forever. As computer-based missiles are launched, and a wayward Digimon kidnaps the Digidestined, only the combined efforts of the Internet and the Digidestined can save the world from disaster. Starring the voice acting performances by Jeff Nimoy, Neil Kaplan, Michael Reynolds, and Steven Jay Blum.
As part of my golden age of watching kids TV during my late childhood and early teenage years I watched episodes of the 'Digimon' anime series every weekday after school and on Saturday mornings. Through several viewings of this I knew the action and storyline here is way better than that of 'Pokemon' - which was also popular at the time when the film was theatrically released - for its seriousness and sometimes little use of comedy, although the cute factor of the little monsters remain in them. I hear that the movie was actually adapted and edited from three short films originally made for Japanese audiences to secure a PG rating so I don't know what scenes are missing, and I wished it had included everything but I'm OK with the American edit. Just as I was watching with the great action scenes, I can never complain about the length as I remember this quote from the cute Terriermon: "What do we have to do to end this fighting?".
