Review of Dig (2012) by Jay M — 13 Aug 2007
Great film if you?re a fan of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. But it?s really bias towards the dandy?s. It spends too much time trying to expose Jonestown?s lead singer Anton for the jackass he is and not enough about his incredible songwriting ability and the scene he created.
In the deleted scenes, there is a conversation with Anton were he lays out his complete musical and spiritual message. That should?ve been in the documentary rather than burps about the dandy?s pseudo psychedelic credibility.
Although I will say the dandys first album, Dandys Rule, OK? is worth listening to, but after that their albums just get more overproduced and more towards their power pop sound they perform today. Anton has more musical ability in his left index finger than the whole dandy warhol production.
The film compares Jonestown and the dandy?s for a period of seven years. Along the way it paints of picture of the rising dandys and the failures of Jonestown to make it big, but what it forgets is that while the dandys played much bigger gigs and sold more albums, The Brian Jonestown Massacre put out twice as many albums and changed what the revival rock scene is today.
It should?ve been just a history of the music of Jonestown, because there?s no comparison when it comes to The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
