Review of Dig (2012) by Jeff H — 24 May 2009
An extremely entertaining documentary about the divergent paths taken by kindred musical spirits in the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Dig!, in a way, is an Overnight for the music industry, showing how far talent alone will get you when you act like a total douche.
The total douche in this case is Anton Newcombe, leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre with its revolving door line-up, a humourless, bitter, smacked-out narcissist ("I am not for sale!") redeemed only by supposed musical genius, which the Dandy Warhols, to their credit, bear testament to repeatedly despite also bearing at times the brunt of Newcombe's rage.
Ultimately, Newcombe comes across as a self-destructive and deluded wanker, rather than as an unsung hero of the American indie scene.
