McTiernan returns and tries to take the first film and throw enough twists into the formula to make it fresh. The film now takes place in an entire city instead of just a building. John isn't trying to save his wife.
He's got a partner in tow. It's all admirable, and it mostly works. The supporting cast, like Samuel L. Jackson and Jeremy Irons, are fantastic. It's a nice change of pace for the series.
