Review of Die Hard 2 (1990) by Clint L — 07 Nov 2010
Do not let the negative reviews put you off watching this film. I watched it again for the first time today and it is what I always thought it was, a solid way above average action sequel. This film is not a failure.
The 80s was the decade of excess and this film is truly the product of its own enviroment. Die hard 2:Die harder, it does exactly what it says on the tin. If there wasnt more action and explosions than the first one then then people would use that as a subject to whinge about.
Every set piece is memorable and even better when sprinklred with mclaines sarcastic wit. If you mention die hard 2 to any movie fan and he will reel off some of his favourite action scenes or catchphrases, most of these cemented in pop culture history.
As for Mclaine himself, he is on top form. Willis manages to inject more charisma and humanity into mclaine within one film, than Arnold schwarzenegger and sly stallone could do in a million. Die hard 1 may have made people take notice of willis as a credible action star.
Die hard 2 certified that. And yeah maybe the supporting characters were a little annoying always disagreeing and working against mclaine, but that creates friction and in turn creates tension. Without tension there is no film.
......imagine if everybody listened to willis from the begining, it would be a very short film. Maybe the bad guy isnt as chilling as gruber, but hey apart from heath ledger in the dark knight, no one could top that.
Die hard fulfills its purpose, to whisk you away from your life for 2 hours of action and excitement lkie a good movie should and it succeeds. To the people thinking about giving this fill a chance go ahead you will not regret it.
To all you naysayers............yippee ki yay motherf***ers!!!
