Review of Die Hard 2 (1990) by Ruth L — 17 Aug 2011
Ugh! This one does not hold up well, especially when placed next to the glorious breakthrough of #1. How DO you follow up a movie that became a standard in explaining other movies? (ie. Die Hard on a Plane, Die Hard on an Island, etc.).
To be fair, it's a step above par for the action movie genre, with that little dose of human John McClane brings instead of some over-the-top big goon. But gone is the emotional attachment from the first one, and McClane is not alone technically, just surrounded by mostly idiots who get in the way.
The worst parts are when Bruce Willis actually has to show emotions other than tough-guy / silent type. Scenes like when the plane crashes and John cries, "Whhhyyy?" (cue eye roll). At least you did something, John... right? haha.
It was better 20 years ago, I guess. It just shows us again that creating lasting movies is not done with the technology they're made with, but the depth of emotions it stirs within us.
