Review of Die Another Day (2002) by James W — 29 Jun 2013
The first time I saw this I thought it was a stunningly mediocre Bond film. As the years have gone by, I have come to think of it as a good but not great Bond film. The opening scene is pretty good, and the titles were great showing a captured James Bond at a low point we've never seen him in before.
The rest of the movie is a mixed bag. The villain isn't very good, and his plan not very entertaining. The ice castle stuff was cool looking and made for some good set pieces but still belong in the "unnecessary" category, along with the wind surfing the waves and the invisible car.
The film does have some truly memorable scenes. The sword fight at the fencing club jumps to mind. And on the thing this film is known for more than anything, Halle Berry, I was not sold. Did not like her as a Bond girl at all.
Additionally, I hate it when Bond movies play up Bond getting older. Bond is ageless.
