Review of Dick Tracy (1990) by Tyler M — 23 Jan 2008
Before there was "Sin City," there was "Dick Tracy," which I firmly believe is still one of the best filmic interpretations of a comic. This is perhaps the only film in a genre I'd like to call cartoon noir (I guess you could probably place "Sin City" in the genre as well).
What Warren Beatty did in making this film was, to put it simply, everything right. The look is perfect; the story is exactly how it should be; and the characters - oh the characters! - they are tremendous interpretations of the characters within the Tracy mythos.
And the entire cast is perfect, even those actors, or perhaps especially those actors, who merely make little more than cameos as wacked out Tracy villians. There are just so few films that could have this look, this camp, this mood, and yet still work perfectly - and actually work perfectly BECAUSE of those things.
What a great film - one of my alltime favs.
