Review of Dick Tracy (1990) by Tanya D — 26 Jul 2009
Warren Beatty perfectly portrays and realizes the square-jawed, comic book detective Dick Tracy. Pitted against a megalomaniac crime boss, he cracks down with the help of a street orphan. Although somewhat thin on plot, this is one of the most visually stunning comic book adaptations I've seen next to the "Batman" series.
The costumes and sets with vibrant primary colors and excellent makeup work certainly boast ambition on Mr. Beatty's part to do something different and exciting in the gangster genre. We also get Al Pacino, who's hilarious as the manic Big Boy Caprice and Madonna in possibly her best performance (although that's not saying much, but her singing stands out) as femme fatale Breathless Mahoney.
If you can get appreciate the vintage nature of this film's quality, you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did.
